Sixty-Nine Percent of Healthcare General Counsel Say Their Emergency Preparedness Plan Inadequately Covers Risk, Consero Survey Reveals

Screen Shot 2016-01-12 at 6.26.53 AMBETHESDA, MD – (Jan. 11, 2016) – Over two thirds (69%) of healthcare General Counsel do not believe that their emergency preparedness plan covers all risk exposure adequately, according to a new survey by Consero Group, an international leader in creating high-level, invitation-only events for senior executives. The results were reported as part of the September 2015 Healthcare General Counsel Data Survey, compiled by Consero Group in partnership with Bass, Berry & Sims.

When asked to identify their top risks, the highest percentage (39%) of General Counsel identified cyber security/protection. HIPAA/HITECH compliance was named the second-highest area of risk by 36 percent of surveyed healthcare GCs, while regulatory healthcare changes came in third at 33 percent.

“Although legal departments of healthcare systems are being pulled in many directions, General Counsel priorities remain clear. Addressing cyber security and other risks in 2016 is top-of-mind for these executives,” said Paul Mandell, Founder & CEO of Consero. “The fact that such a large majority believe their emergency preparedness plans do not cover their risk exposure is a worrying data point that should improve as healthcare GCs address their top priorities.”

Additional Findings Included:

  • M&A Activity a Top Focus for Healthcare GCs: Thirty-six percent of healthcare General Counsel identified merger and acquisition activity as a top area of focus in the coming months.
  • Access to Resources Greatest Impediment to Progress: Nearly a third (31%) of surveyed GC named access to budgetary resources as the greatest impediment to their department’s progress in the coming months.
  • Large Majority of Board Members Involved in Quality of Care: Seventy-three percent of respondents reported that their Board members are either involved or extremely involved in matters relating to quality of care in their health system.

Consero surveyed GCs from mid-size to large U.S. hospital and healthcare systems in connection with its invitation-only Healthcare GC Forum in September 2015. Though limited to 46 participants, the results yielded interesting data for discussion in the healthcare arena. The survey was composed of 15 questions.
