January 2013 General Counsel Report

The last twelve months offered some formidable challenges for the nation’s chief corporate legal officers. With intensifying global regulatory demands, new developments in the intellectual property realm, the enactment of the Affordable Care Act, an uptick in deal activity, and the continuing pressures of an uncertain economy, 2012 required as much focus and expertise as any year before. The demands on the nation’s General Counsel appear likely to remain intense into 2013, delivering new and more complex pitfalls in a constantly evolving global marketplace.

This survey report, presented in partnership with Applied Discovery, Inc., was developed in connection with an invitation-only event hosted by Consero Group LLC in December 2012 for a group of Fortune 1000 General Counsel. While the survey was limited to 48 participants, the answers provide some useful benchmarking data, as well as insight into the perspective and concerns of this group of senior in-house lawyers.

Survey Structure And Methodology

Consero’s 2012 General Counsel Survey comprised a total of 11 questions in the following areas:

The questions were posed to all Fortune 1000 General Counsel in attendance at Consero’s invitation-only December 2012 General Counsel Forum. A total of 48 responses were provided, yielding data that appears with brief analysis on the pages that follow.
