November 2012 Corporate Compliance & Ethics Report

The global compliance landscape is evolving rapidly. As complexity and risk increase for the world’s multinational businesses, the compliance function has never been more critical to long-term corporate success. Fundamental to the performance of any corporate compliance function is the use of benchmarking data. This report is a response to the call for such data by Fortune 1000 chief compliance officers and general counsel who have participated at Forums hosted by Consero. Though the sample size represents just a fraction of the many chief compliance officers of today’s large businesses, the data provides insight into the state of the compliance industry, as well as a useful starting point from which peers at large corporate organizations may launch discussions about best practices.

Survey Structure And Methodology

Consero’s 2012 Chief Compliance Officer Data Survey comprised a total of 11 questions in the following areas:

  • Departmental staff size
  • Access to corporate leadership
  • Departmental budget
  • Chief Compliance Officer compensation

The questions were posed to all Fortune 1000 chief compliance officers in attendance at Consero’s invitation-only October 2012 Corporate Compliance & Ethics Forum. A total of 48 responses were provided, yielding some interesting data that has been referenced in a variety of publications, including the Wall Street Journal and Inside Counsel. The responses and some analysis appear on the pages that follow.
